Colour of May

About

This embroidery was a challenge I set myself to test how capable I was at creating a layered material pattern and the effect of multiple fabrics. The Subject of this embroidery is the Hooby Horse. The Hobby Horse is a local Minehead tradition that, if we are completely honest, no one knows for sure how or why it started. It happens in the beginning of May. The Hobby Horse march is the same every year and brings a smile to many of the faces of the people it passes, and scares the rest. As the Horse makes its way down the street it dances to the beat of drums and a tune played by accordion. The time of year that the Hobby horse marches around town always makes me happy, and as soon as I hear those drums I grab a camera and go chasing the march. It is truly one of the few things that make me glad I live in a small country town.
